DACIA SANDERO IS CROWNED WHAT CAR? CAR OF THE YEAR 2021

The Dacia Sandero has been awarded the ultimate accolade of ‘Car of the Year’ in the What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2021.

  • The UK’s most affordable car took the title after fighting off competition from some of the most prestigious and advanced cars currently on sale

The UK’s most affordable new car beat some of the most prestigious and advanced cars currently on sale to the coveted title, with What Car? proclaiming the Sandero its overall victor based on its comfort, specification, practicality and sheer outright value.

Each of the Awards’ 26 category winners were in the running for the overall ‘Car of the Year’ title, with the Sandero qualifying after scooping the hard-fought award for ‘Best Small Car’.

Commenting on why the long-established magazine and online new car buying platform voted the Sandero its champion of champions, Steve Huntingford, Editor, said: “The Sandero is comfortable, good to drive, well equipped and very spacious, so it would be well worth considering even if it cost the same as its small car rivals. Except it doesn’t, of course. It’s an absolute bargain and an outstanding achievement.”

Vincent Tourette, Managing Director, Groupe Renault UK, said: “We are incredibly proud to accept such a prestigious award, the ‘Car of the Year’ title showing how Dacia and the Sandero have gone from strength-to-strength and are now held in high regard for so much more than just affordability. Of course, delivering unrivalled value is at the heart of Dacia, but with the All-New Sandero it’s now complementing this with features and a driving experience that are superior to much more expensive rivals. For the All-New Sandero to win the overall ‘Car of the Year’ award, especially against such impressive competition, is a real highlight in Dacia’s UK success story. We look forward to bringing it to UK customers in the coming weeks.”

The Sandero has triumphed in the annual awards, with the five-door hatchback having won its price point in the ‘Best Small Car’ category since 2013.

  • Recently launched third-generation model complements unrivalled value with higher levels of standard equipment and enhanced driving dynamics

Dacia also scored with the Duster SUV at this year’s online presentation ceremony, the rugged, no-nonsense SUV taking home the new ‘Best Buy for value’ award that is now incorporated in the ‘Best Family SUV’ category.

Reflecting on What Car?’s decision to recognise the Duster’s unbeatable value, Steve Huntingford added: “It’s hard to believe that Dacia can sell the Duster for so little. Go for our favourite 130bhp turbocharged petrol engine and it's capable of tackling both city streets and motorways without any trouble, while keeping running costs sensible. Plus, the interior feels well put together, and our recommended Comfort trim comes with niceties such as cruise control and a feature-packed touchscreen infotainment system.”

Recently revised with a fresh new exterior design, enhanced equipment, more safety features and a completely new interior, the All-New third-generation Sandero, is one of the first Dacia models to be built on the advanced CMF modular platform. The new platform provides the All-New Sandero with superior strength and structural rigidity, increasing protection in the event of a collision. As well as automatic emergency braking being available as standard, the structure is reinforced and collisions can be detected more quickly, deploying new curtain and side airbags more rapidly. An E-Call emergency call system is also standard on all models, operated using an SOS button placed next to the interior light.

The All-New Sandero is available in Access, Essential and Comfort trim levels. The line-up starts with the Access from just £7,995, which includes such features as automatic LED headlights with Y-shaped LED daytime running lights, 15-inch steel wheels, front electric windows, speed limiter, phone docking station, Automatic Emergency Braking System (AEBS) and six airbags.

All-New Sandero customers can also choose from a variety of Euro 6D-Full-compliant engines and transmission options, including Dacia’s TCe 100 Bi-Fuel powertrain that pairs an LPG bi-fuelled 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission. For the first time, the All-New Sandero is also available with automatic gearbox, meaning that customers have more options than ever before.

The All-New Sandero goes on sale on Feb 1, 2021 and is available from just £7,995 OTR. Customers can pre-order it today for only £99 and receive three years’ free servicing at Sutton Park Dacia.
